In collaboration with the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR), the Kuwait Green Building Council (KGBC) hosted From Waste to Roads, a hybrid lecture and discussion exploring the challenge of tire waste in Kuwait and the potential for discarded tires to be repurposed and reused in road construction.
The topic is particularly relevant to Kuwait, which has faced one of the world’s largest accumulations of discarded tires. The former Al-Rheyya site once contained more than 40 million waste tires before they were transferred to Al-Salmi for treatment and recycling, highlighting both the scale of Kuwait’s tire-waste challenge and the importance of developing productive uses for this material.
The session featured Dr. Haya Al Mutairi from KISR, who shared insights into innovative approaches to incorporating recycled tire materials into road infrastructure. The presentation explored how an existing waste challenge can become a resource, reducing the environmental burden of discarded tires while contributing to more sustainable and circular infrastructure solutions in Kuwait.
The lecture was followed by an interactive discussion, bringing together KGBC members attending in person at the KGBC Members Hub and participants joining through the online webinar.
Members from both audiences raised questions, exchanged perspectives and discussed the opportunities and challenges associated with implementing these solutions locally, creating a stimulating exchange between researchers and industry professionals.
The session highlighted the importance of research, collaboration and circular thinking in addressing Kuwait’s waste challenges and demonstrated how materials traditionally viewed as waste can be reconsidered as resources for the built environment.
