Green Over Gray: Emilio Ambasz

Monday, 10 November 2025

The Kuwait Green Building Council (KGBC), in partnership with Ajial Real Estate, hosted its third screening in the Green Movie Nights series — a community-focused initiative using film and expert dialogue to explore key sustainability themes. This edition shifted the spotlight to architecture and the role of design in shaping greener cities.

The event featured Green Over Gray: Emilio Ambasz, a documentary that examines the work of Emilio Ambasz, a pioneer of green architecture known for integrating nature into modern design. The film raises a key question: does “green” simply mean adding landscape elements, or can it represent a deeper shift toward sustainable design?

Following the screening, a panel discussion took place featuring experts: Kai Wartel and Amna AlSager of AWA (AlSager & Wartel Architects), Sarah AlRukhayyes of AGi Architects, and Muneerah AlRabe, architect and Teaching Assistant at Kuwait University. The discussion, moderated by KGBC Technical Officer Fay AlRushaid, tackled a central question—can green architecture be meaningfully implemented in Kuwait, a desert nation often described as “beige over gray”? Panelists explored the potential and challenges of adapting Ambasz’s philosophy to local climate, policies, and cultural contexts.

The evening encouraged architects, designers, and sustainability professionals to reflect on how the built environment can evolve beyond decorative greening to embrace holistic sustainability.
